Microsoft has developed several Windows Vista versions to please all users.
For example there are users who don't need all features so they don't need a version like Vista Ultimate.
While there are also user who do need all features of the most extended version.
Windows Vista Home Basic
Ideal for standard use in your home situation
This version of the Windows Vista versions is one which is meant for basic use in home situations. So if you want to use your computer just for surfing the internet, e-mailing, working with Word, Excel, etc. or viewing pictures then Windows Vista Home Basic is the right version for you.
This version offers not as much possibilities as Windows Vista Home Premium but it is a version to let you work with Vista quite easily and safe.
Windows Vista Home Basic protects your computer automatically against harmful software and against websites that can harm your computer. This also means that you and your family can use the computer with all confident.
Another function is that parents can configure the computer to let their children use the computer safely and well.
Advice:
if you just want a simple version of Windows Vista which isn't too expensive because you don't need much more then surfing the internet, typing documents and watching your holiday pictures, then this version of Windows Vista is the version you need.
Windows Vista Home PremiumMore user-friendly, security and entertainment for your computer
This version of the Windows Vista versions is a bit more extended then the Windows Vista Home Basic version. This version provides more productivity and entertainment on your computer either you are at home or on the way. In this version is Windows Media Center integrated so you can enjoy even more easily from your digital pictures, tv, movies and music.
This version of the Windows Vista versions has a better security and a higher reliability. Also is this version provided with the Windows Aero technology which shows you dynamic reflections, superb animations, transparent and glassy menu bars and lets you switch from one opened screen to another in a three-dimensional lay-out. Also there is a search function and new ways to order your documents so you can easily find your e-mails, documents, pictures or music you need.
Another feature in this version is that your documents, computer and your family are better protected than they were in previous versions of Windows. Also you can make automatically a backup of your files like your pictures, music, movies, documents etcetera. Furthermore, parents can configure the computer to let their children use the computer safely and well.
About the entertainment, there is plenty of it in this version. By using the integrated Windows Media Center it is much more easy to order and enjoy your pictures, music, DVD's, movies and your recorded TV-programs. You can do this from your computer or even from your TV in the living room. Also it is much easier to burn movies on a DVD.
As I said is Windows Vista Home Premium also a good version for laptops. For example there is an improved power options tool, improved wireless network options and a tool to synchronize easily with other devices like mobile phones or PDA's.
Advice:If you want a more graphical display and use the Windows Aero technology this version is the right version. And if you want something more then just surfing the internet, typing documents and watching your holiday pictures, for example burning DVD's, using the Windows Media Center features and making backups easily, I recommend this version. This version is a bit more expensive then the Home Basic version but also not the most expensive one. So if your budget isn't so much I recommend this version.
Windows Vista UltimateThe most complete version with a lot of extra's.
Windows Vista Ultimate is the most complete version of the Windows Vista versions. This version has all the power options functions, security functions and mobile functions. This version offers the business functionalities but also the entertainment functions. So as I said, this is the most complete version with all functionalities in it.
Windows Vista Ultimate offers all functionalities of Windows Vista Home Premium, like Windows Media Center, Windows Movie Maker with HD (high-definition) support and Windows DVD Maker. Besides that offers this version all functionalities of Windows Vista Business like the business network functions, management tools and advanced functions for making backups.
Furthermore offers Windows Vista Ultimate support for all new mobile functions in Windows Vista, like the Windows Tablet technology and the touch technology, Windows SlideShow and more advanced functions.
Advice:If you have a larger budget and you want to get the maximum of your computer then Windows Vista Ultimate is the version out of all Windows Vista versions you need. If you want to make advanced backups of your entire computer like the system settings etcetera and you want to use your computer for business purposes and either entertainment purposes I recommend this version of Windows Vista versions.
Windows Vista BusinessThe version meant for small business
Windows Vista Business is the version out of all Windows Vista versions which is specially developed for small businesses. Using this version companies can work more efficient thanks to a better, user-friendly interface where you can easily find information on the computer or on the internet. Also this version has a better security to protect the company information.
Also this version is provided with the Windows Aero technology which shows you dynamic reflections, superb animations, transparent and glassy menu bars and lets you switch from one opened screen to another in a three-dimensional lay-out.
Using this version it is easy to create or restore backups of important documents, files, system files and programs.There is also a feature which automatically archives previous versions of your files. So if you save changes in a document accidentally or if a document gets damaged, it is easy to restore it by placing back the previous version.
Advice:If you have a small business and you want to have all the business features in the operating system like easy backing up, restore files easily and the right protection for your company I recommend this version. Or if you want a lot of extra functions as mentioned above but you don't need Windows Media Center this version of Windows Vista is the right version because Windows Media Center is not integrated in Windows Vista Business.
Windows Vista EnterpiseThe version meant for large international companies
Windows Vista Enterprise is designed for large international companies and organizations which have complex IT-infrastructures. A difference between Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Enterprise is the security. Windows Vista Enterprise provides a even higher security level then Windows Vista Business by protecting data on a hardware based coding technology.
This version is the one of the Windows Vista versions which is very much focused on data security. That's why there is a extra security functionality integrated called Windows BitLocker-Drive Encryption. This new technology prevents that important data of your company falls in wrong hands if a computer is stolen or lost.Windows BitLocker uses the hardware based coding technology. The entire hard disk will be encoded to make sure that the important data is only available for your company.
This version is also provided with integrated applications which take care for a better compatibility with applications from previous versions of Microsoft- and UNIX-operating systems.
This version of Windows Vista is only available for customers with computers which have a Microsoft Software Assurance contract or a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement and it isn't available in the stores.
People who don't have this Microsoft Software Assurance contract or Microsoft Enterprise Agreement have to choose one of the other Windows Vista versions.
Advice:
If you are in a business situation and your company has an agreement as mentioned above you can order a Windows Vista Enterprise edition. If you need a complete operating system for your large company which needs to be protected very well against data loss you should choose this version because this version really is focused on security in a large business situation. Or if you want to integrate your UNIX applications into one system this is the right version for you because Windows Vista Enterprise is compatible with UNIX applications.This isn't a version for a home situation.
General advice:
If you are looking for the right version out of all Windows Vista versions, you should ask yourself for which purposes you are going to need it for. Compare your needs with the descriptions at each version above and choose that version which fits most with your needs. Also look for a version which fits in your budget. Furthermore I recommend to run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor utility from Microsoft to be sure your computer is compatible with the right version of these Windows Vista versions.
