I have a laptop with VISTA that i wish to connect to a projector to give illustrated talks, but i cannot get the laptop to save the settings when i go into multiple displays. I select 'CLONE' and the combination of my HP laptop and Panasonic ..monitor, but when I click APPLY, that holds, but when I click YES on do you want to save the new settings, these change before anything can be changed reverting to a default setting.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 and I decided to do the "BACK Up Files" task. It seemed to be running quite smooth, albeit taking forever to copy all my files onto the DVD's. I kept going along inserting DVD 1, 2, 3 etc as instructed and am now very near the end and am on DVD Disk 9, the name on the DVD's I was instructed to use is: BACKUP User-PC 31/3/2009 8:38am Disk 9 (1-9so far)  now the progress bar seems to be at the end (full green bar) however the Back Up Files program is not ending or stopping. Giving me back access to my PC. I can use the PC of course but cannot use or change any settings on the Back-Up (if you look at settings it says I have never done a back-up) I cannot open the DVD drive, if I turn off my PC will all the saved work so far be for not? what I read online is that if you stop or interrupt the backup in the middle then you cannot recover. Would I have to start over? I really would not want to waste 9 more DVD's or my time, which was all day yesterday and some of today waiting. The reason I am doing a BackUp is in case I get a virus were my PC is totally wiped out or messed up to the point where I have to F-disk and start from scratch. As I said I am using Vista Home Premium SP1 Have a Hard Drive size 298 GB with 187 GB free. If you need more info please let me know.

i got acer aspire 5335 laptop with windows vista basic installed on it. now the trouble is i think its problem when i maximize any of my windows aero feature does work and i can see icon on the back ground but when the windows are not maximize the tob bar is coming as normal its not coming as aero one. i don't know why this is happning. any body got any clue on it.

I can't seem to get into my floppy drive during a cmd session. I enter the command cd A: and it pops up as the a drive for a single second and then kicks me back into my last default drive. I just bought a new HP Pavilion Entertainment Pc which came with Vista. I am using a HP C6100 printer via a wireless network. For e-mail, I use Outlook 2002 (yeah, I know, I should upgrade and have ordered the latest). My problem is that I cannot send email as long as the HP printer is shown as default printer. when i try to open power cd+g burner i get the following error message: power cd+g burner has stopped working. a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly, windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

i get no notification, and i have tried the only solution i know which is right clicking om MY COMPUTER, going to properties, then to advance system settings, then to system property settings then click on data execution prevention, and add power cd+g burner.exe to the DEP but still it won't work, anyone got any ideas?

A message recently appeared: "A driver is installed that causes stability problems with your system. The driver has been disabled. Contact manufacturer (Roxio) for an update that is compatible with this version of Windows." When I attempt to play a video, I get this message: "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder & video card. It never gets any further than the welcome screen and never stays on. It won't even go into safe mode. I have no system resore due to a Packed.Win32.Tdss. virus attack. Is any way of fixing this problem without reinstalling the Vista OS? If not. Is there any way to retrieve my files, pictures, music etc I have a laptop that I can put the files onto if it is possible.

When I signed up as a User for this Laptop I did so with an Administstrator Account. Now the Administrator Account password seemed to be expired. I do not have access to downloads, cannot enter messenger because there is an updated version available and it needs to be confirmed by the Administrator which I am but I cannot confirm it. When I turn my computer on, the screen says,

"Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - o% complete.

Do not turn off your computer."

After about 30 seconds, the screen stays the same, but changes to 93% complete, shuts down to restart and comes back with the same message as above. I have interrupted the restart with an F8 and have been able to get to a screen to attempt repairs. USB ports do not work. A couple weeks ago I noticed that my keyboard, which plugs into an USB port, did not work. I worked around it by using a keyboard with a keyboard specific plug, but then noticed that my i-Pod wouldn't sych. The i-Pod will charge, but the computer doesn't recognize it. Likewise the computer does not recognize my thumb drive.

Most of the time when I log on, it reaches the welcome screen and then changes to a completely blue screen, with my mouse cursor still visible. I have tried leaving it for up to half an hour and nothing changes. When I tried to boot it up in Safe Mode, i was presented with a black screen and nothing else. Similarly, when I turn off, log off, restart etc. it sticks at the logging off screen, but not frozen as the little circle continues to spin... I haven't (as far as I'm aware) added or removed anything recently. I've also run about 3 different virus scans as well as RegCure and CCleaner, but with nothing coming up. I bought a new PC two days ago along with Gforce 9600 GSO 384 mb DDR3 and I am running windows Vista. My problem is that when vista ask for permission to open any program my monitor blinks for a second otherwise the system is performing good. I am using a Vista Home Premium Desktop. I run a Weather Station using Heavy Weather, Weather Display going to the Internet with cwop / APRS Data Send. The Vista with my weather station get the weather data and sends it to the computer using one of the com ports 1,2,3 or 4. All settings have to be the same, if I use com port 2, that the other setting have to be on com port2.

The problem is: when Vista uses and com port it seems like it cannot find it, no matter what port a person uses. IT'S AND INTERMITTING PROBLEM. One time it connects, the next time it will not connect when rebooting the computer for any reason. Some times, I have to reboot the computer 3 to 4 time before it well connect to the port.

It use to work 100% of the time when rebooting the computer. ANY ONE HAS ANY IDEA WHAT IS WORNG??

I recently purchased a new computer that came with Windows Vista Home Premium-64 and IE7. I HAVE to use ActiveX controls in order to perform my work but Windows will not let me install ActiveX controls. Additionally, reducing the security level on some of my features now pops up warnings everytime I click on a new page or change pages. I also cannot go directly to my homepage, though it is added to the list of my secure sites, and every web page I open brings up an annoying banner at the top saying my security settings are too low. 1. How do I get rid of all the alerts and warnings that prevent me from effectively and efficiently Accessing the internet and conducting business?

2. How do I stop Vista from asking me if I initiated a process everytime I do something?

I have gone in the Internet options, tools, content, auto complete, settings.

I have clicked yes to save password. (Did that twice)

I have clicked okay for the whole "content" screen. The screen would closed. I reopened all the screen to setting again and pressed again okay.

I've got the Home Premium version and it did something unusual. My wife was using it last night. She had been on it for about a half hour. Without warning it popped up a message asking if she wanted to save her data. She clicked "NO" and the PC instantly powered off. It did not shut down, but powered off instantly like the plug was yanked out of the wall. She started it back up and about an hour later it did the same exact thing. I'm running Vista Home Premium on an Athlon X2 laptop. When I've logged in it beeps device load/device unload every other second. When I open explorer there appears to be a USB storage device (drive g) which it attempts to install but fails (not connected - if it ever existed). When I open the device manager i get an opening and closing device tree and I find the USB storage device under USB devices. Deactivating or removing the device does not work, neither does deleting all USB devices cause the problem to go away after restarting the laptop. Is the culprit some incompaitble USB device that was incorrectly removed or is this a virus? Ideas anyone?

I have RealPlayer 11 with approximately 500 downloaded audio files and videos. Everything was fine until yesterday, it pulls up but when I try to click on any type of file it freezes up and says that it's not responding. I, then have to force close it.

Windows Movie Maker on Vista machine does not import HD video properly (I believe this is Movie make 6).  In order to import video The stream from the camera must be down graded.

In addition, once all segments were put together for the 17 minute vido I experienced the system lock up every time I attempted to insert titles and credits.  The lock was such that the machine had to be hard booted to unlock it.

To finish the project the 17 minute video was published to a wmv movie and put on an XP machine which permitted the instalation of the titles.

I have windows Vista Home on a new laptop. I try to install some programs, that I have no problem installing on other machines, yet on my new machine, vista keeps crashing and defaulting back to the original state, no programs. I haven't even connected to the internet yet.

When I try to connect to Vista to activate OR validate OR Update my Vista-ultimate I am redirected to Addresses assigned to AFRINIC (165.165.39.X) OR RIPE assigned addresses (213.199.181.X) where X varies.

When I allow this redirection my Windows Update of patches is stated as completed but given update rate this is impossible and immediately my system begins to misperform.

I can't download anything!

Whenever i try and download something, it starts to save and then just vanishes.. no sign of it anywhere. This is on both IE and firefox and it has started to stop letting me open links and attachments with emails :( someone help please?

Have a Vista Premium Windows Mail problem.

Suddenly, for no reason, I cannot open E-Mails.When I click on an Incoming E-Mail the title jumps down to the bottom task bar and blinks. Right click dowes nothing but when I left click I get a number of options and one of them is maximize. This brings the letter up and I can read it but I cannot Reply or Forward. The only other option is Close and all that does is take it back to the Incoming Mail box. Totally lost. Can you suggest anything. I have RegCure installed but it does not help. Awful fed up with Vista!!!! but am stuck with it I guess.

my dell inspiron wants to format any disks, will not allow me to read the disk or auto start

I have a movie maker project already done but some of the clips duration are 3 sec and some are set for 4. Is there any way I can change all of them without having to change each one individually?  Also some of the transitions are shorter and some are longer is there any way of changing those without having to manually change each and every one?

Another solution might be the following:
Maybe in the screen, which pops-up after selecting Print from the menu, the option 'Print to File' is enabled? If this is the case remove the check mark. If this is not the case please check the 'Options' button to see other possible things that could cause your problem.

This might be a solution for your Windows Vista problem: Probably your boss has selected the default 'printer' called the 'Microsoft XPS Document Writer' which prints the document to a file. To actually print the document your boss has to select another printer from the dropdown list.

Solution:

• Click the menu button and click Print
• Select another (a real) printer from the list
• Now your boss can print his document.

If no real printer is installed please read our 'How to install a printer in Vista' page to get helped installing a printer in Vista.

I have a new computer with Vista Ultimate. I am using dvd maker, and want to make several copies of the same movie (fo info, an amateur theatre group) - so it takes about 2 hours to encode and then ~10 minutes to burn.

At the end I have the option of burning another dvd, so I insert a new one and it then normally just takes an additional 10 minutes. Fine.

Problem is, if I had insert a non-blank dvd (my mistake) or if it happens to be a dud at least as far as vista is concerned (and 5-10% of those you buy are duds), the only option is to click "ok" in the pop-up window, and... start all over again, i.e., 2 hours encoding and so forth.

Why can't I just insert another blank, and the burn would just proceed normally?

I must be missing something...

I am new here and need help. I have a laptop hpdv9730us on vista home premium. I just installed Microsoft Office Pro. 2007. I get the following error when opening word docs. only. I tried a reinstall of word and it did not work.

My Acer notebook is unable to connect to the internet via internet explorer.

Sinds januari ben ik in het bezit van een ASUS F5VL laptop met Vista Premium. Van bij het begin ervaar ik problemen, namelijk dat hij soms meerdere malen per dag vastloopt.

Een aantal maanden geleden heb ik de notebook naar het Asus service center in Nederland (gratis, daar hij nog in volle garantie is) verstuurd. Daar werd de hardware volledig getest en werden er geen problemen gevonden.

Na een paar dagen kreeg ik opnieuw hetzelfde probleem. Een vriend adviseerde mij om Vista terug te herinstalleren. Dat is zonder problemen gelukt. Nadien heb ik nog een aantal controles en updates gedaan:

• volledige virus- en malwarescan
• service packs en Windows Updates zijn up to date
• gecertificeerde Drivers zijn up-to-date
• systeembestandcontrole: sfc /scannow ; Chkdsk /f C: en defrag /c.
• alle niet Microsoft Shell Extensions uitgeschakeld

Mijn eerste idee was dat dit probleem iets met de mousedriver of touchpad te maken had omdat de muis gewoon blokkeerde en een volledige reboot noodzakelijk was. Om dit te controleren heb ik voor alle zekerheid een volledige ASUS live update uitgevoerd met o.a. een bios update.

Misschien heeft het iets te maken met mijn internetverbinding. Zou ik raar vinden omdat er nooit problemen waren. Ik gebruik een AETHRA VDSL modem/router (firmware is up to date) en mijn ISP is Skynet.

Op mijn notebook zijn geen programma's geinstalleerd die niet compatibel zouden zijn met Vista.

Hi i seem to have a problem with my vista, the picture on my computer screen keeps on phasing out when i either restart my computer or just leave it alone and it just won't come back on.

I have to either press F11 or F10 to get it restarted or just unplug my tower and closed my computer screen to get my system restored again after waiting hours and hours.

Since downloading a Vista update package, every time the PC is started, the following message appears: Configuring updates: Stages 1 of 3 - X% complete.

It takes about 1 hour to get to 100% and then the following message appears: Your computer was unable to start - Startup repair is checking your system for problems. After that sequence is complete, the log in window finally appears.

Is there a fix for this?

i recently found out about Dreamscene on vista ultimate and i wanted to use have that same application available on vista home premium so i found a patch titled "nonultimatedreamscene". after extracting the files and placing 4files inside my system32 folder (found in the c:drive/windows/system32) i double clicked the "installdreamscene" batch file and confirmed to install. at the end of the installation i confirm installation to finalize.

I then restart my computer then right click my desktop>personalize, then the personalize page reads "page failed to load" so now i dont have a clue if im able to use dreamscene, also i cant even just go to change my current background.

Now that something is messed up, How can i make everything back to default in the system32 folder?

I am unable to delete emails from my "deleted items" folder in windows mail. It shows a message "message could not be displayed" when you try to select to delete, then says "an unknown error has occurred" and the email won't delete from the folder.

Help! Any advice would be appreciated.

Was running fine, surfing, etc. Then, all of a sudden, no internet. Laptop is connecting, but not acquiring DHCP. XP system side-by-side functions fine. Wireless/wired the same response. Looks like there's tons of fixes, but, the what works best question begs.

Thomas, to get your recycle bin back to your desktop you can do the following:

• Right mouse click on your desktop,
• Click 'Personalize',
• In the right pane, just below the word 'Tasks', click 'Change desktop icons'.
• In the window which now appears you check if there is a checkmark in the checkbox at 'Recylce Bin'.
• Place a checkmark in the checkbox.

If the recycle bin already has been enabled do the following:

• Right mouse click on your desktop,
• Click 'View',
• Click 'Show Desktop Icons'.

I have a problem which a lot of people (who own the same laptop) seem to have, but as yet no-one has posted a solution

I have a Compaq Presario V6500 laptop running Vista SP1 and is brand new. Actually, it is a replacement for another brand new unit, but has exactly the same problem which resulted in the original being returned.

The laptop frequently hangs, either displaying a blank screen, diagonal pattern or the blue screen of death.

Vista recognizes the problem, and points to the nvidia display driver, but offers no solution, merely suggesting visiting websites for drivers. So, having visited Nvidia and ultimately HP's website, I have downloaded and installed the updated drivers/software but still the problem persists.

Lots of Google searches reveals lots of people with the exact same problems but only people replying asking for the memory dump, and then no further replies or solutions.

I really would love to know why this is happening.

I burned some data to a DVD and closed the session. When I went to look at it the next day, the disc was "blank". The DVD-RW icon showed the space used, but no files showed on the DVD. I put it in my CD drive, and some of the files showed.

How are you supposed to burn something and have it, accessible and on the DVD/CD, forever with Vista?

Al, you say you have tried deleting upper and lower filters? What do you mean by 'deleting'?

You should try the following:

- Type Run and type regedit,
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- SYSTEM
- CurrentControlSet
- Services
- Click once on 'cdrom'
- Then in the right pane, click right mouse button on 'AutoRun' and click 'Modify'
- Set 'Value data' to '1'

Sandeep, this could be a possible solution for your problem:

Check the website http://www.diskdata.com. Using this tool you can find every file on your computer, so you can delete the large and useless files from your computer. Delete for example all the temporary internet files or other temporary files.

Note: be careful that you delete only the files of which you are sure they can be deleted.

Recently i am having problem with my laptop with windows vista. all the disk space in C drive is reducing automatically..i tried to look for solutions and then i tried to reduce the system restore size using the vssadmin list shadowstorage command but it did not work..when i used the command it said no items can be found...

If you want to backup your favorites of your browser like internet explorer, there is even a better way to save them instead of printing them out. Do the following:

- open your C drive
- open the folder Users
- open the folder with your username

Here you see a folder called 'Favorites'. Copy and paste this entire folder to a USB stick or someplace else.

When your computer has to be reinstalled you could place the entire folder back in the same user folder and your favorites are back again.

I typed a doc 3 days ago acannot remember the title. Have tried searching with words I know were in it Vista cannot find it. Did an experiment to prove Vista cannot find all docs by typing new doc, saving and trying a search - Vista could not find it.

WEB FORMS DON'T WORK IN VISTA MAIL

Hello! The problem I am having is when I send an email to my susbscribers with a web form on it, users with Vista can't complete and send the form when using Vista's new Mail program or Outlook.

When using Vista's Mail program, the SUBMIT button doesn't do anything. When using Outlook, if they hit the spacebar the mail is unselected.

Users with Outlook Express and Outlook using Windows XP and Windows 98 have no problem. I have tested this on my XP computer and the forms work well, but not in my Vista computer.

Does anyone know how to make forms work on Vista Mail?

Lora, A solution for your problem could be the following:

On your second computer you should go the Network and Sharing Center and click 'Manage Network Connections'. Here you should disable the network connection en re-enable it again.

This should do the trick to get connected to the network. This is a known problem with Windows Vista.

It could be that they have blocked you. This could be done automatically by their provider.
Let them check their Spam settings.
If you use Windows Mail from Windows Vista you can also check the Junk E-mail options by clicking Tools - Junk E-mail Options. There are 5 tabs where you change some settings for your junk e-mail. Maybe there is something you can change to solve the problem.

Hiya dudes, feel really stupid as I think it's me, not the Vista Home Premium I have on my laptop thats the problem.

I have an expansion program to Sid Meier's Civ III called Conquests. It ran on my old Windows ME, Vista won't have it. Throws up an error 28. I even know what to do about it, as it's told me, I just don't know how.

Very frustrating! I have to find the display control panel, find the effect's tab, then make sure the font smoothing option is ticked.

I can do this on my Dad's computer, although not sure of the operating system, so I sort of know how to do it.

I just can't find enough detail in the display controls in the control panel.Any ideas?

Chris, Uninstalling Windows Media Player is not advisable. You could search on the internet for other media players. For example there is BS Player which is a good media player. Search for this player on the internet or type in Google 'free mpeg player'. After downloading and installing this media player you could try if Learning 2000 can be opened in it.

If not, it could be that you haven't got the right codecs installed. Search on the internet for 'mpeg codecs' or 'avi codecs'.

I have bought new computers for my family and we went from windows XP to VISTA. We can not get the Learning 2000 to work on them. It worked perfectly on the old computers. George, You cannot delete files or directories from a dvd. If you have burned them on a dvd-rw, you can burn the dvd again without the files and directories you want to delete but deleting files or directories from a dvd is not possible.

The manufacturer has installed genuine Windows Vista Home Basic on it and they made partion like C drive 70GB and created a rcovery disk which is about 7.00GB (HDD capacity is 80GB). By this time I have made another drive using 'Shrink Volume' option, which is possible in Vista. Now my HDD like C drive 40GB, D drive 30GB and rest is for recovery disk. The problems which I am facing now....as shown below

1. The space of C drive is decreasing day by day and I can't make it as it was when I have purchased it.

2. If C drive behaves like this..after few months no more disk space will be available...it will be a disaster for me.

3. How can I burn the recovery disk to a DVD? If I get the DVD after burn, can I use it for a fresh Vista setup as I am worried about the disk space of C drive.

Need your valuable suggestion on my problems. Thanks in advance.

Peter, I have about the same problem as you have. The only difference is that when I play a video file on my computer using Windows Media Player, another message appears which is almost the same as yours.
UnfortunatelyI don't have the solution for your Vista problem and I hope someone can help both of us with this error.
