What has changed in Windows Vista
Internet Explorer ?

Windows Vista Internet Explorer icon

Working with Windows Vista Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer 7 has changed on several ways in comparison with earlier versions of internet explorer.
Internet Explorer is integrated in Windows Vista so you don't need to buy or download it seperately.

You can also download other browsers to surf the internet but let me explain why I would recommend internet explorer 7.

Enlarge webpages
If the text on a webpage is too small to read you can enlarge the text on the page to make it readable. You can do this on two manners:
You can enlarge just the text on the page or you can enlarge the complete page, including the images.
If you just want to enlarge the text, you click on the 'Page' button -> Text size. In this menu you have five options to make the text smaller and larger. If there is no 'Page' button in your browser and there is no menu, then you press the 'Alt' key on your keyboard. Now the menu will show up. In this menu you click 'View' -> 'Text Size' and then you can also choose one of the five options to make the text smaller of larger.

If you like to enlarge the complete page, including the images, then you use the 'Zoom' function which is also in the menu after clicking the 'Page' button.
You can also hold the 'Ctrl' key on your keyboard and press the '+' key to zoom in.

How to get a full screen view
To get a full screen view of the webpage you have opened in Vista Internet Explorer 7 you simply press the 'F11' key on your keyboard.
To exit the full screen press 'F11' again.

How to change the homepage
The homepage is the first page which appears when you open your internet browser. Do you want to change this page? Here is how to do that.

  • Open the Vista Internet Explorer
  • Click in the menu (if there is no menu, press 'Alt' to show the menu) on 'Tools' -> 'Internet options'.

Windows Vista Internet OptionsThen this screen appears.
Here you enter in the textarea the website you like to start Vista Internet Explorer with. Be sure you type the 'http://' before 'www'.

After entering your favourite website you click 'Apply' and 'Ok'.

Working with tabs
A new feature in Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7 is that you can work with tabs. This is very usefull because now you can open more websites in different tabs but on your taskbar there is only one Internet Explorer open.
To activate a new tab you simply click on it or press 'Ctrl' and 'T' at the same time.

Windows Vista Internet Explorer Tabs

Now you can navigate very simple between you tabs by clicking on the tab you need. If there is a like on a website and you want to open that link in a new Tab instead of a new window you right click on the link and select 'Open in new tab'.

Open new tab

You can also get a visual overview on which websites you have opened in the several tabs. This can be very usefull if you have opened about 10 tabs for example.

How to get a visual overview of tabs?
If you have more tabs open a small button appears at the first tab.

Visual tabs icon

If you click on this icon, all your opened tabs are being displayed as small screens like in the image below.

Internet Explorer Multiple View

To navigate between these sites you simply click on the site you want to open in your screen.

Change settings for tabs
In Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7 you can make changes for working with tabs. If you open again the 'Internet Options' using the 'Tools' button in the menu, you see a 'Settings' button at the 'Tabs' section. Here you can make changes. For example:

  • Warn me when closing multiple tabs (enable / disable)
  • Always switch to new tabs when they are created
  • Open homepage for new tabs instead of a blank page
  • etc.

Working with RSS Feeds
Feeds (also called RSS Feeds) is often used for weblogs and newssites, for example for the websites of tv stations or news papers. If you subscribe to such a RSS Feed you receive the news automatically after publication. So you don't need to check that website every hour to see if they published new news items.
If there are feeds from a website available, then the RSS button in the Vista Internet Explorer bar colors orange to indicate that you can subscribe to that websites RSS Feed.

Block Pop-ups
A pop-up is a webpage which will be opened in a new window. Some pop-ups are pop-ups which are ok, like windows where images will be opened in. But there are also many websites which display only advertisements or adult content and you don't want your children to see the adult content. The unwanted pop-ups are also called automatic pop-ups, because they appear without asking for them.
Windows Vista Internet Explorer has an automatic function to block these pop-ups. You can enable or disable this function.

To enable or disable this function you click 'Tools' in the menu and select 'Pop-up Blocker'. In the second menu which appears you click 'Pop-up Blocker Settings'.
In the screen which appears you can do some settings. For example you can ad websites where pop-ups are allowed from or you can change the filter-settings (low, medium, high).

Phishing ShieldPhishing Filter
Phishing is a technique where criminals can steal passwords and pincodes.

Let me explain how phishing works:
You receive an e-mail which appears to be from a bank or a company (often Paypal and Ebay are being misused for this). In the e-mail you will be asked to reply or to check your bank or Paypal account.

If you click on a link in that e-mail, Vista Internet Explorer (or another browser) will be opened and it looks like you are visiting the correct website (for example it seems like you are on the website of Paypal).
But be careful, this isn't Paypal's website but a fake identical website on another website address!
When you enter on this fake website your username and password (because you think this is the real Paypal website) you will be forwarded to the real Paypal website but the criminals now have your username and password of your account and can send the money in your account to another account, in other words they steal your money!!

This trick works because the e-mail and the fake website look both very confident. The website looks identical in comparison with the real website. Without a phishingfilter you would probably also enter your username and password.

The phishingfilters of Windows Mail and Vista Internet Explorer protect you against the fraude as described above. In Windows Vista Internet Explorer the address bar colors red and a red shield with a white cross in it is being displayed when phishing is detected. Furthermore you will be informed that the website is a suspicious website or that it is a phishing website.

How does the phishing filter work
the phishing filter works on three different ways. First it will compare the address of the website you are going to visit with a list of known, legitimate websites which is stored on the computer.
Second: websites will be checked for often used phishing techniques.
Third: the URL's of the websites that you visit will first be looked up in a Microsoft database with rapported phishing sites. Using this way a website can even be blocked on the last moment. This only happens if you give permission for it.

How to enable or disable the phishing filter
You can disable the phishing filter at any time you wish.
Click on the 'Tools' button in Windows Vista Internet Explorer and select 'Internet Options'.
Click on the tab 'Advanced'.
Search for the phishing Filter part in the list. There are three options to choose here.
We strongly recommend NOT TO DISABLE THE phishing FILTER.

Phising Filter

Remove information for autofill
Windows Vista internet explorer can remember passwords and other information you enter in websites. If you visit a website of which a password is remembered by internet explorer, the password is automatically entered in the password box.
When you begin typing in for example a textfield for your name or address, the information will be automatically showed because you entered this information already once before.

If you are working on a computer on your work or school for example you probably don't want that this data will be remembered by internet explorer.

If you want to delete this data so internet explorer doesn't fill your information out automatically you do the following:

  • Click 'Tools' and select 'Internet options'.
  • On the 'General' tab you click on the 'Delete' button at the 'Browser History' section.
  • Then the 'Delete Browsing History' windows appears.

Click on 'Delete History' if you want to delete all the data of earlier visited websites. Here you delete also the menu which appears below the address bar where you type the URL

Click on 'Delete Forms' to delete all the form data you once entered.

Click on 'Delete Passwords' to delete all stored passwords.

Disable AutoComplete
If you don't want that the data you enter in website will be filled out automatically, you can disable this function using the following way:

Internet Explorer AutoComplete
  • Click 'Tools' and then select 'Internet Options'.
  • Click on the 'Content' tab.
  • Click on the 'Settings' button in the AutoComplete section.
  • Mark the checkboxes you like to be enabled or disabled.
  • Click 'Ok'

Setup Search Engines
The internet consists of more than 15 milliard information pages. On the internet you really can find everything. The only thing is that you need to know how to search for things on the internt. You can use search engines like Google. In Windows Vista Internet Explorer you can configure how you search on the internet.

In internet Explorer there is a special search field where you can enter very simple a keyword. Here you can configure which search engines has to do the search. For example you can select Google, Yahoo, Windows Live Search, Ask, Lycos, etc.

  • Click on the arrowbutton of the search field in the upper right corner of internet explorer, and select .Find more providers'. Now a website appears with all kinds of search engines.
  • Click on the search engine you like to add to your own search engines list and in the window that appears you click on the 'Add provider' button.
  • To add more search engines repeat these steps.
  • Click again on the arrow button in your browser and select the search engine you want to use for your searching the internet.

Setup your default search engine
If you have choosen multiple search engines, you have to choose one as default search engine. You can do this the following way:

  • Click the arrow button in your browser.
  • Click 'Change Search Defaults'.
  • In the window that appears, select the search engine you like to set as default and click 'Set Default'.
  • In the search field you can see what your default search engine is.
