Spam Monitor - Anti Spam Software
If you're tired of looking at spam every morning (and we're not talking about the breakfast meat), you're not alone. Fortunately, the team here at Star Reviews hates spam as much as you do and we've decided to do something about it. In our quest to find the best anti-spam software options out there, we ran into a nifty program called Spam Monitor. We found some useful features in this program, but get the whole scoop on its performance below.

Star Reviews' Favorite Feature:
We really like the fact that Spam Monitor is compatible with any POP3 email client. Many POP3 spam filters only work with Microsoft Outlook or a few of the other top POP3 applications. Spam Monitor works with all of them including the lesser-known POP3 products.
Spam Monitor User Interface and Product Application:
As with most spam filters, downloading and installing Spam Monitor wasn't a problem at all. However, the Star Reviews team really recommends making any necessary changes to your default settings right away. If left as is, these defaults can really mess with your email flow. Also make sure that you whitelist any legit emails that are marked as spam as soon as you see them, so you don't miss out on emails you really need.
In addition to using blacklist/whitelist technology, Spam Monitor uses something called Bayesian filtering. We have one word for it - frustrating. Now, I'm sure that Bayesian filtering works really well once you have trained it in what to look for, but therein lies the problem – you have to "train" it. Most of us want a spam filter because we don't have time to deal with the massive amounts of spam email in the universe. We probably don't have time to be training a Bayesian filter either.
One other problem we ran into with Spam Monitor was slower email download speeds. While our email usually downloads in no time at all, Spam Monitor seemed to more than double the time it takes. Again – it's a time and convenience factor here and Spam Monitor slowed us down.
As far as filtering goes, the product does well. (Perhaps too well if you don't adjust your default settings and "train" your Bayesian filter properly.) However, we really would have liked to see all potential spam put into a spam folder rather, then just labeled as "spam" for us to review in our inbox.
Spam Monitor Features:
- Enhanced interface
- Automatic configuration wizard
- Works with all POP3 clients
- Automatic update tool
- Bayesian filtering technology
- Microsoft Outlook plug-in
- Supports unlimited POP3 accounts
- Blacklist/whitelist capabilities
Pricing Plan:
Spam Monitor is free if you want to use the trial freeware version of it. However, if you want the fully-functioning Spam Monitor application with all the bells and whistles it will cost you:
- $29.95 for 1 computer
- $49.90 for 2 computers
- $99.95 for 5 computers
- $189.00 for 10 computers
Customer Support:
Spam Monitor customer support is definitely above par. The company offers help via a toll-free phone line and an online support section, which includes forms to contact the company and answers to frequently asked questions.
Both email and phone support were very professional. They were able to explain why our email dowload times were slower and what we could do to improve them. The information was also found online in their help database, but we had a hard time coming up with questions that Spam Monitor didn't already answer in their FAQs. For the sake of the spam filtering cause, we took the hit and looked like bumbling idiots asking questions we already knew answers to. At no time, however, did their support team make us feel this way.
Upside:
Great customer service, free to try, volume discounts for licensed purchases.
Downside
Not as efficient as some of the other spam filtering products on the Web.
